When I was 12 years old and in 6th grade, I was taken out of public school and put in home-schooling.

When I was 12, I used to be a brat. Whenever I wanted, I used to get into fights everyday on the bus and showed no respect to anyone. When my mother would try to lecture me, I would tune her out and go do the opposite of what she said. In school I would never stop talking and would not listen to any of the teachers or principals. I got sent down to the office around 4 or 5 times a week.

The worse thing that I ever did when I was in this phase was during a championship basketball game, I was the best person on the team and the leader. It was a close game and there were only a few minutes left when my coach made a mistake with the substitutions and accidentally took me out when I was on a roll. I was furious with him and went to the top of the bleachers and would not go back into the game. We ended up losing that game. It was my fault and I let the team down.

After that game, my mother had had enough of me and my attitude. My uncle teaches self-actualization classes and my aunt taught home school. I was taken out of public school and put into the classes and home school. The class was a 30-day workshop in which I was the youngest person. We had to do a lot of things in that class and it totally changed my life. When the class was over, I had a totally different outlook on life. My first basketball season after that, I took out my anger on playing defense. I got the defensive player of the year award and my team won the championship.

That was the best thing that ever happened to me and I will never go back to having attitudes again. I am very thankful to my uncle and he has changed so many people's lives throughout the world. I hope that nobody ever does to their team what I did, because they will regret it tremendously.

Here are the teachers' comments:

Sam came to Beaver [Pennsylvania] this year -- FROM TEXAS!!!
He made a monstrous transition. Well rounded, flexible. Articulate, he was able to express personal weaknesses and growth from those. Very mature. Sam is ambitious, composed, strong goals. I hope he takes advantage of his many strengths. Beaming and confident in what he has accomplished. Great learner.
